Catching Waves for Health Surf Therapy Program
The purpose of this project is to continue to explore the potential physical, mental and emotional benefits of a surfing program and to create two new physical activity programs for children with disabilities. Approximately 80 children (ages 5-21) will participate in an adapted summer programs (60 children) and an adapted aquatics program (20 children) during the spring and summer of 2017. Children with developmental, sensory and physical disabilities will be eligible for the program. Each child will be individually paired with a student from the University of Rhode Island or community volunteer for both programs. The surf program will take place twice per week, for eight weeks, at the Narragansett Town Beach. The aquatics program will take place once a week for eight weeks at the Tootell Aquatics Center at the University of Rhode Island. The programs will began the beginning of May and go until the end of June.
