John G. Chipura Foundation
To continue the legacy of John G. Chipura “Chip”, who was dedicated to helping and serving his community through his life as a Marine, in the NYPD and FDNY and a life-long member of the Boy Scouts of America, we started the John G. Chipura Foundation to help families in need.
John (‘Chip’) was an extraordinary man whose larger than life personality was eclipsed only by the size of his heart. A United States Marine for 7 years, Chip survived the 1983 terrorist bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. He lost hundreds of his fellow Marines that day, but he never lost his spirit. The incident only increased Chips’ dedication to help and serve his community, which he proudly did for the City of New York for fifteen years. Chip was a Police Officer as well as a Detective in the NYPD’s 72nd precinct, and a firefighter with the FDNY assigned to Engine 219 in Brooklyn. While working as a firefighter, Chip selflessly gave his life while saving others at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Since 1974, Chip had been a member of the Boy Scouts of America. He rose to the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He believed very strongly in the organization’s mission and donated much of his spare time as an Assistant Scout Master with Troop 21 in Staten Island.
