NY Lap 4 Life
What are we doing?
On Saturday 12 September 2015, our team will be walking a lap of Manhattan to help raise funds and awareness for the Villa Maria organization. The walk is 32 miles, and will take us an estimated 12 hours. We plan a day of fun as we walk all parts of this great city, raising money and awareness for people living with disabilities, while strengthening ties between New York and Australia. We challenge ourselves for one day to help those who are challenged every day.
Villa Maria is a not-for-profit, values-based organization providing quality services and life enhancing opportunities for children and adults with a disability, and their families.
One of Villa Maria’s many services is St Paul's College, a specialist school providing education for children aged 5 to 18 years with a wide range of needs including intellectual, physical, profound multiple and sensory disabilities and complex medical needs. All St Paul’s College students have individual educational programs created through comprehensive consultation.
Villa Maria provides specially modified buses, with dedicated space for wheelchairs, to transport students to and from St Paul’s College. Unfortunately, with just 3 buses, each transporting 9 students, only 35% of St Paul’s students have access to the service. For some students this means missing out on life changing education, and therapeutic benefits entirely.
The 2015 Lap for Life will support Villa Maria’s Build-a-Bus campaign, which aims to provide a reliable, safe way for St Paul’s students to get to and from school each day. It costs approximately $200 per week for each student to use the bus services. With our help, Villa Maria can 'Build a Bus' from the wheels up, giving more children than ever before the opportunity to get to school on the bus.
