Wounded Officers Initiative
The Wounded Officers Initiative, Inc is a nonprofit corporation registered in the State of Florida and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a public charity, 501(c)3. The organization was founded in 2014 by three active law enforcement officers from the Orlando area of Florida. The initiative was created in response to the inadequate and uneven benefits and recognition provided to law enforcement officers catastrophically injured in the line of duty. The founders identified a moral need to bring awareness and advocacy for these Heroes who have sacrificed so much of themselves only to be forgotten with little, and at times, no benefits. There are numerous organizations that do amazing work in assisting wounded soldiers, as well as the survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, unfortunately, there are far and few for wounded law enforcement officers. The Wounded Officers Initiative hopes to become a national organization making it the first of its kind. The model of the Wounded Officers Initiative was developed based on the proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” With that concept in mind, the Wounded Officers Initiative developed 5 Principle Goals; Counseling, Advocacy, Awareness, Recognition, and Education also known as “C.A.A.R.E.”. The goals of the Wounded Officers Initiative are meant to address the long term needs of wounded officers rather than temporary quick fixes. Through C.A.A.R.E. the Wounded Officers Initiative hopes to achieve financial security, good mental health, reintroduction to the workforce, and well deserved recognition for wounded officers.
