A Blade of Grass

Our Mission
A Blade of Grass nurtures socially engaged art. We provide resources to artists who demonstrate artistic excellence and serve as innovative conduits for social change. We evaluate the quality of work in this evolving field by fostering an inclusive, practical discourse about the aesthetics, function, ethics and meaning of socially engaged art that resonates within and outside the contemporary art dialogue.

Shelley Frost Rubin founded A Blade of Grass in 2011 with a deep interest in expanding audiences for art, finding creative approaches to activism, and exploring the potential for art to change lives in straightforward, practical ways. Rubin is Co-Founder of the Rubin Museum of Art and a philanthropist of numerous cultural and humanitarian projects throughout the world.

Our primary program, the ABOG Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art, provides resources and visibility to artists who are working in direct partnership with communities on creative social change initiatives across the country. The ABOG Fellowship supports individual projects, while building a broader case study about the practice, for the field and public at large. Our public programs, online forums, films and publications are designed to foster critical dialogue, participation and excitement around socially engaged art and its values.
