The Hartt School Senior Class of 2016
Joni Johns Lerner has been painting fabrics for over twenty five years. Current examples of her work can be seen on the stages of the Broadway, National Tour, Japan, Australia & Mexico City companies of The Lion King and on the Broadway’s & National Tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Other recent projects include Peter Martin’s Harmonielehre and New York City Ballet’s Harlequinade; Artemis & Swan Lake at American Ballet Theater, Mark Morris’ Sylvia, San Francisco Ballet and Kansa City Ballet’s The Nutcracker, which premieres later this year. Joni has also painted costumes for Bette Midler in her recent Kiss My Brass Tour & Vegas shows, one of which was featured in a photo spread in W magazine, May’04. Her work can also be seen on the Spiderman costumes at Universal Studios Theme Parks in Hollywood & Florida.
When creating her own artwork, as with the scarf seen here, Joni’s work is a mixed method of techniques. Starting with a white jacquard silk, using a under wash of dyes, she creates texture & motion with color. The second layer is painted with metallic pigment through a series of stencils. While more controlled than the first, this layer too takes on a life of its own as more textures & colors are added with degrees of both translucency and opaqueness. Inspiration comes from many sources: nature, a photograph, even the fabric itself.
