R. Gene Thomas Scholarship Fund
The Upward Bound Program at Georgia Southwestern State University was responsible for helping hundreds of teenagers become the first in their immediate family to attend college. For years, Georgia Southwestern State University housed this program on their campus. Beginning in January of 1992, Mr. Rufus Gene Thomas started working with the program as a counselor, and later became the director of the Upward Bound Program. Under his guidance, hundreds of students were given the opportunity to gain admittance into post-secondary institutions. Mr. Thomas assisted students as they overcame educational, and personal obstacles. In 2008, The Upward Program at GSW ended. However, Mr. Thomas' legacy lives on through the students he helped to become first generation college graduates. His former students have vowed to continue helping students in their community achieve their collegiate dreams through this scholarship program.
We are a committee of former students dedicated to helping scholars in the areas previously served by the Georgia Southwestern State University Upward Bound Program to continue to live the dream of becoming college educated. The committee will present one scholarship to the winner of the R. Gene Thomas Scholarship Essay Contest. Please support our cause through R. Gene Thomas Scholarship Fund .
