The Chris Westmoreland Foundation
In 2013 a vibrant 22 year old, Chris Westmoreland, was losing his battle with a rare cancer that he had been fighting for almost three years. Although cancer slowly chipped away at his independence and his ability to walk, it was not able to extinguish his outgoing personality, love of education, his compassion or his willingness to serve others. Even on his last days he was giving of his earthly treasures to friends and family as they came to comfort him in an attempt to ease their grieving.
Following Chris' passing his family and friends were determined to start an endowment in order to continue to spread the love he had for others by providing youth with scholarships used towards community programs. Working in the community was a summer activity that Chris really enjoyed. We will also be contributing additional funds raised to go towards cancer research in hopes that through grants, medical trials, and continuing education a cure will be found.
A Success Story:
In two short years the Chris Westmoreland Endowment has collected over $30,000 through its signature fundraiser: The Chris Westmoreland Memorial Golf Tournament, and has had over 350 participants and volunteers.
The endowment fund has been so successful that in 2016 The Chris Westmoreland Foundation was formally established as its own entity to ensure the continuation of financial support for cancer research and scholarships for area youth looking to better serve their communities.
Chris may not be here physically but his legacy will be that of a servant leader who wanted nothing more than to help others and contribute to finding a cure for cancer.
