Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance

.
The Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance (MIBA) was founded in 1993 to preserve the highly endangered tradition of brown ash and sweetgrass basketry among the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Micmac, and Maliseet tribes, collectively known as the Wabanaki. The Wabanaki Tribes have made beautiful baskets from these materials for centuries that have been used for both decorative and functional purposes. Since our founding, we have decreased the average age of basketmakers from 63 to 40 and increased the number of people who have made baskets within in our communities to over 200.
