Project Light Rwanda
Project Light: Rwanda is a subsidiary of Create Global Healing, a nonprofit organization striving to light the spirit of hope, healing, dignity and peace for traumatized young adults in war-torn countries. They provide trauma healing, heart-centered leadership and economic sustainability support, as well as providing inspirational connections between these young people, US students and humanitarians. They believe that global healing will take place through compassionate, heart-centered experiences that foster the understanding that we are all connected as global citizens desiring the same things – to love and be loved, to live a meaningful life and to have a bright, peaceful future.
Over the past three years I have been working with Project Light: Rwanda, which was initiated to aid families affected by the Rwandan Genocide. The genocide wiped out approximately 20% of Rwanda's population. I have aided by sponsoring two Rwandan boys. Recently, one of the boys, Etienne, had the opportunity to attend Parul University in India to study for his Masters in Pharmaceuticals. This has been a wonderful opportunity for him, but he has been hit with several hardships since his move. At first, he missed a month of studies at Parul University when he was told classes would start in August, however, when he arrived he learned that classes had started in July. He was also promised bottled water and African food which would meet his dietary needs, however, he was given tap water, which he did his best to boil before using, and local Indian food which he was not accustomed to. As a result, Etienne, and another Rwandan student in India, contracted Typhoid fever shortly after their arrival and were removed from their studies for almost a month. When possible, I try to aid him by sending care packages and money to support his well-being.
