Cardinal Cushing Centers
Cardinal Cushing Centers is a place where people of all ages and all abilities find possibility, opportunity and hope.
At the Cardinal Cushing Centers, we ensure that all young people with significant developmental disabilities have every opportunity to live full and meaningful lives. We serve students through a variety of programs, led by seasoned experts in the fields of education, employment training, residential care, ancillary and recreational services.
Our history began with the late Richard Cardinal Cushing, who recognized the need for quality education for children with intellectual disabilities. He asked the Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi of Milwaukee, Wisconsin – pioneers in the field of special education – to join him. Together they founded one of the first schools of its kind in the Northeast in 1947, St. Coletta by the Sea. Ten years later they opened the St. Coletta Day School in Braintree. Today the organization no longer bears the same name, but we continue the mission Cardinal Cushing started many years ago through our community programs, affordable housing units, and our education, vocational, residential, ancillary and recreational programs for clients.
