Raffles in Texas > Art Canvas Raffle for Brazilian Friends Foundation

Art Canvas Raffle for Brazilian Friends Foundation

If you received an invitation to participate in this campaign it means that you are somebody concerned with social and human vulnerabilities. Some of you know Elizabeth, Mark and Victoria intimately, some do not know them personally. Here is a brief description of their story.

Elizabeth was born in Brazil and moved to Oklahoma, where she met Mark, an American citizen. They have been married for 17 years. They have a daughter, Victoria, who is now 11 years old. They currently live in Houston, Texas, and have a stable, supportive and loving family.

Last February, Mark (who is an IT specialist) lost his job. Two days after his resignation, he felt sick and fainted. He was vomiting blood and, due to the seriousness of the situation, the paramedics took him to the hospital by helicopter.

Unfortunately, Mark was diagnosed with stomach cancer (stage 4) with metastasis in the liver and esophagus. Mark´s health insurance is linked to his previous job and expires NOW by the end of April.
If the couple bears the costs of the health insurance, they will need to pay USD $1,640 monthly for the health plan and medicine (USD $240 copay) for a drug named "Imatinib Mesylate" (Gleevec), which is the only effective medicine to treat his tumor. Without the health plan, the cost with the medicine reaches approximately USD 3,000 per month. Mark and Elizabeth cannot afford such costs and need to start the treatment urgently.

Mark is the only child of deceased parents and has no other immediate relatives. Elizabeth´s family live in Brazil. The couple moved to Texas less than one year ago. At this moment, they need emotional and financial support.

For this reason, we, friends and family, created this page to collect funds to help Mark and Elizabeth to cope with these difficult times.
